Several years ago, the housing markets in many states throughout the United States of America hit rock bottom. While this economic downturn was in full swing, millions of construction workers were forced to leave the industry in search of other, more viable and secure jobs.
However, the market has began to increase in recent years, making it one of this country’s quickest-growing sectors. In some cases, there is even a surplus of jobs in this field, ranging from roadwork to residential and business construction.
In a new survey than involved hundreds of contractors, a large majority of them said they were having problems with finding enough workers to meet the extremely high construction demands. Among the most difficult positions to fill were carpenters, roofers and equipment operators.
Specifically, the roofing industry seems to have a plethora of projects needed, but not enough workers to properly do all of the jobs. In order to try to fix this issue, many construction business owners and managers have tried giving out bonuses to employees, giving them extra training and making sure that they have steady work hours.
Even so, the industry is one that is based off of supply and demand, so some managers have stated that it is not always easy to tell how many workers you may need at any given time. After all, the amount and length of projects can vary greatly depending on the area and month you are working in.
Although carpenters may not make very much to begin with, some workers have stated that hard work and dedication can improve your wages, as well as your outlook on the career.
Indeed, proper training is of utmost importance in the construction industry, especially in the modern era. Construction site supervisors are required to know more about technology than they used to be.
After all, the industry has become far more dependent on computerized machines, with three dimensional designs and blueprints exchanged between architects and contractors even on the sites themselves. Furthermore, workers often use global positioning systems and lasers in order to figure out exactly where things should be placed.
Especially in recent years, some contractors have made it a necessity that potential workers have at least some degree of technological training or education, considering that on-site training can be limited and time consuming. Even though this may seem a little much, it definitely opens up wider opportunities to workers in the field. Not only can you be a construction worker, but you can also be an electrician, a plumber, or even a chemist.
So although the upswing in the construction industry is certainly happening, many question how long it will actually last. Although there are more than enough projects available, contractors and businesses have been struggling to hire enough workers in accordance with this.
Some solutions that experts in this field have suggested are to increase wages so that more people would be interested, and to have construction classes in school since the industry is becoming more education-intensive.
